As 2014 wraps up, we remember all that happened this year.
Many folks compile and share lists of the Top 14 moments, Google searches, and words to describe this year on social media. I ran across this blog on Tumblr that requests followers to submit mixes of their 14 favorite songs from 2014. Because I could never condense everything from this year into just 14 words, I chose the song option.
Every season and year, I compile songs that I discover or describe my mood, and I finish 2014 with a playlist that I believe accurately describes this last year for me. But to make the #14for14 challenge more difficult, I decided to only include songs released in 2014. That was when I discovered that there are an inordinate number of songs from both the 90′s and 2013 on my “2014″ playlist. So, you will notice that only a few were permitted to advance to the #14for14 playlist. But, behind each addition is a story.
The opening track “Different Colors” by Walk the Moon is included because it is the song that popped into my head while watching Google’s 2014 Most Searched Video. I think it depicts what we’ve seen in the media recently with a focus on unity and a hopeful tone that we can make things better. The next track “Golden” by Parade of Lights was featured in commercials for the Sochi Winter Olympics almost a year ago. The OneRepublic song included is one of my favorites from their latest album. I also included “Red Eyes” from the album Lost In The Dream by The War on Drugs, which was picked by Amazon experts as the Best Album of the Year.
I also included a few songs from some of my favorite films from this year. “Mug Shot” by MAX from the Veronica Mars movie released ten years after the television show ended after the infamous Kickstarter campaign. Tove Lo’s “Scream My Name” from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack appears, and so does “The Hanging Tree” song, included as a bonus song. Many of the other songs are from artists featured on Bham Mountain Radio. And others speak to the hope of a new year, like the 14th song “Believer” by American Authors. The third song “Home” from Ingrid Michaelson’s brilliant new album Lights Out is great for reminiscing about the past year.
